Sweeney Todd

So I went and saw Sweeney Todd this week and being a Tim Burton fan I quite enjoyed it. Of course I enjoy dark, twisted humor, irony and musicals and the production was great all the way around on this one. The singing was way better than I had anticipated it (the whole cast sings and includes the likes of Johnny Depp and Sacha Baron Cohen) would be and how can you not enjoy lyrics like:

“There’s a hole in the world like a great black pit
and it’s filled with people who are filled with shit!
And the vermin of the world inhabit it!”

It was also bloodier that I had expected but then that ties into the dark humor. So yet another Tim Burton classic is born.

Back and Books

Well I arrived back home today and am looking forward to getting back to my writing soon. Picked up a gigantic new dictionary for myself this week and a bunch of other books. Lesson learned this holiday season..never visit the bookstore on boxing day! I now have a huge stack of new books, compliments to some serious sales and my book discount card.

A couple of my freshly purchased items include, “The Giant Book of Ghost Stories” which is a bunch of short stories from various authors, “Crooked Little Vein” by Warren Ellis and “My Life With Corpses” by Wylene Dunbar. I’ll let you know how they are. Also, since my current bookshelf is overflowing I’ve decided I’m going to purchase two new bookshelves (one for my reference books and the other for everything else) in January, a little birthday gift to myself. :-)

Ho ho ho and This and That

Filed under: Verbal D, My Writing — KatB @ 1:17 am

Well, I am leaving early in the morning to head out to the countryside to spend some time with my mom for a few days. It’s just us two single sods again this year for the holidays so it will be relatively quiet. I’ll be cooking us a nice casual din and then we’ll likely go catch a movie. So a short reprieve and some R & R time for me. :-) A few of my favorite delightful things about my moms house… sleeping diagonally in a futon bed that must’ve been made for elves and a computer circa 1980’s. Of course there’s all those naked snow people as well. How can you not smile when surrounded by fluffy white round naked beings?

So Happy holidays everyone! :-) I hope you enjoy the break and get to spend some time with those you love.

One more thing before I go, you’ll notice there’s now a new page that I’ve added for my book “Mental Decay” on the right hand side of the page. If you want to find out more about the book head on over there. ->

Here’s a sneak peek at one of the poems from the book.

I thought I’d very quickly pop in and let you know that I am indeed still alive. I am continuing to practice the art of sleep deprivation compliments to my late night writing but I will be catching a few ZZzzZZ’s soon enough and will post a proper update soon. Randomness for today… an interesting sign for you. Sounds like a nice place to visit no?

On a more serious note, here are a couple of new quotes for you that I really like:

“For hope is but the dream of those that wake.”
- Matthew Prior

“Life is a tragedy for those who feel, and a comedy for those who think“.
- La Bruyere

“Our truest life is when we are in dreams awake.”
- Henry David Thoreau

In case you missed me DJ-ing on the radio yesterday… I started doing a quick little parody re-write of a classic. Can’t blame a girl for having a sense of humor. ;-) So TGIF and I’ll try write more of an update later if I have time!

Twas the night before Christmas,
When all through my house,

My goddamn neighbor,
Was yelling at his spouse.

The only stockings hung were drying outside,
And smelled like something inside of them died!

The neighbors kids smoked pot in their bed,
While drunken parents forgot what they said.

And I in my undies, my pen in my hand,
Had just settled down to write my demands.

When out on the lawn their arose such a noise,
I sprang to my feet, forgetting my poise.

Over to the window, I whipped back the curtain,
Exposing my undies to a man, a criminal for certain!

The moon bounced off the mans shiny head,
And I thought for sure that I’d soon be dead.

And then to my surprise eight tiny men appeared,
It looked like that fat man was just fucking weird!

And he whistled and shouted and called them all names,
And demanded they run or he’d light them with flames.

Then he yelled to me that his name was Nick,
I thought to myself what a fucking prick!

And off they went the 9 of them together,
Yelling and hollering about Christmas forever…

…To be continued?…

Monday

Filed under: Book Progress, Writer's Corner, Verbal D — KatB @ 1:06 am

Happy Monday! I can’t believe another year has almost vanished and Christmas is sneaking up. Yes indeed, it’s the time of year when these shockingly rotund, chalky, “beings” emerge and take over my mom’s house.. some are even naked with the exception of a hat and scarf !
stuffed_snowman_toy.jpg

….stay tuned for some video footage on their take over… ;-)

This year however will be a very quiet one and I’m planning on spending most of my time writing. Speaking of which, I’m still reading through a couple of forensics books, also reading “Inside The Criminal Mind” which is an interesting read and I just ordered another writer’s reference book: “A guide To Wounds and Injuries” to round out my research. Aside from that I’m currently reading “Savage” by Richard Laymon.

What are you reading right now? (yes you can add comments here, go ahead give it a try)

So far my novel seems to be coming together nicely, it’s taken a few unexpected twists and turns but I’m moving along at a decent pace.:-) Ideas for a second book keep creeping in and naturally I try to push them out of my head while I work on my first book but I end up jotting down ideas here and there anyway.

Snow and Things

Filed under: Book Progress, Verbal D — KatB @ 1:37 pm

I spent most of the day yesterday reading through forensics books and making notes and then was up into the wee hours of the morning again writing. Thankfully I have music to keep me company while I write so that dulls the silence a bit. It snowed over night here which only happens a couple of times a year in Vancouver. Other than that there’s no snow, it’s just rainy in the winter much like LA weather.

Speaking of snow, someone sent this to me and having lived in Montreal and Calgary for a number of years I found it amusing so I’m posting it. (no I didn’t write it)

Subject: Think you’ve had enough of snow have you?

DEAR DIARY,

August 12th - moved to our new home in Canada. I am so excited. It’s so
beautiful here. The mountains are so majestic. Can hardly wait to see snow
covering them.

October 14th - Canada… it is the most beautiful place on earth. The leaves
have changed to all colors and shades of red and orange. Went for a ride
through the countyside and saw some deer. They are so graceful. Certainly
they are the most wonderful animals on earth. This must be paradise… I
love it here.

November 11th - Rememberance Day. Deer season starts soon. I can’t imagine
anyone wanting to kill such a gorgeous creature. Hope it snows soon. I love
it here.

December 2nd - It snowed last night! Woke up to find everything blanketed
with white. It looks like a postcard. We went outside and cleaned the snow
off the steps and shovelled the driveway. We had a snowball fight (I won).
When the snow plough came by we had to shovel the dirveway again. What a
beautiful place. I love Canada.

December 12th - More snow last night. The snow plough did its trick again to
the driveway. I love it here.

December 19th - More snow last night. Couldn’t get out of the driveway to
get to work. It’s beautiful here but I’m exhausted from shovelling. Fucking
snow plough.

December 22nd - More of that white shit fell last night. I’ve got blisters on
my hands and a sore back from shovelling. I think the snow plough hides
around the corner until I’m done shovelling the driveway. Asshole!

December 25th - Merry Fucking Christmas! More frigging snow. If I ever get
my hands on the son-of-a-bitch who drives the snow plough, I swear I’ll kill
the bastard. Don’t know why they don’t use more salt on the roads to melt
the fucking ice.

December 27th - More white shit last night. Been inside for three days now
except for shovelling the driveway after the snow plough goes through every
time. Can’t go anywhere, the car’s stuck in a mountain of white shit and
it’s so frigging cold. The weatherman says to expect another 10 inches of
the shit again tonight. Do you know how many shovels full of snow 10 inches
is?

December 28th - That fucking weatherman was wrong. We got 34 inches of the
shit this time. At this rate it won’t melt before summer. The snow plough
got stuck up in the road and the bastard came to my door and asked to borrow
my shovel. After I told him that I had already broken six shovels shovelling
out all the shit he had pushed into my driveway, I damn near broke my last
one over his fucking head.

January 4th - Finally got out of the house today. Went to the store to get
food and on my way back a damned deer ran out in front of my car. Did about
$3,000 damage to the car. Those fucking beasts should be killed. The
bastards are everywhere. Wish the hunters had exterminated them all last
November.

May 3rd - Took the car to the garage in town. Would you believe the thing is
all rusted out from all that fucking salt they put all over the roads.

May 10th - Moved to Florida… I can’t imagine why anyone in their right
mind would ever want to live in such a God forsaken place as Canada.
